An Art Deco Tour in New Zealand

12 02 2008

While in New Zealand, Andy and I went on a tour in a town that was demolished entirely by an earthquake in 1931. They rebuilt the town in the up and coming style of the day–Art Deco. So, there’s a lot of interesting architecture to be seen.

At one point in the tour, we approached one of the buildings we were supposed to have been able to tour the inside of. The former business that occupied this space had been replaced with the sort of business that doesn’t open very early. As a result, I was treated to the image of a horde of architecture enthusiasts attempting to break into a girly bar:

it’s like an “Onion” picture: “New Zealand strip bar refuses to open early for tourists”

No one else on the tour seemed to find it funny. Maybe it’s an American thing only, I don’t know. I believe we were the only Americans on the tour.

Mumbai, India has a lot of buildings built with Art Deco influence. I am not aware of a tour, but you can see these in the downtown area.

Art Deco style was very popular in Mumbai, India in the 1930s. As the city was expanding due to land reclamation projects to connect the seven separate islands, wonderful building were built in this style. Many of these structures are still intact, although their upkeep is not that great.
